An emergent relationship that is produced when two other stimulus - stimulus relationships have been mastered.Specifically, when an individual is trained that A=B and B=C, the individual can state that A=C without being explicitly taught this third relationship. Transitivity refers to the transfer of the relation to new combinations through shared membership (if AB and BC, then AC). If these properties are characteristics of a matching to-sample performance, then training AB and BC may produce AC, BA, CA, and CB as emergent relations (reflexivity provides the three other possible relations, AA, BB, and CC). A=A A=B A=C derived Equivalence reflexivity relations Stimulus Stimulus equivalence symmetry trained transitivity untrained Transitivity The stimulus equivalence example used in this intervention is transitivity because there are three stimuli (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2007). It is a stimulus-stimulus relation that is a product of two other relations. The third emerges without reinforcement or instruction.

For example if AC, and AB then BC. A practical example would be the written word dog is to the picture dog, as the spoken word dog is to the picture of dog, therefore the derived relation is that written word dog is to the spoken word dog.

Reply. • Some demonstrations of transitivity, but symmetry? Not so much… • Lionello-DeNolf (2009) reviewed 24 studies in non -humans— only two showed consistent evidence of symmetry • Galizio & Bruce (2018) —dozen more studies, but still only two successful procedures… Lionello-DeNolf, K. Transitivity A derived (i.e., untrained) stimulus-stimulus relation (E.g., A=C, C=A) that emerges as a product of training two other stimulus-stimulus relations (e.g., A=B and B=C). For example, transitivity would be demonstrated if, after training the two stimulus-stimulus relations shown in 1 and 2 below, the relation shown in 3 emerges without additional instruction or reinforcement: 2019-09-12 · In the broadest sense, transitivity is a method of classifying verbs and clauses with reference to the relationship of the verb to other structural elements. Put simply, a transitive construction is one in which the verb is followed by a direct object; an intransitive construction is one in which the verb cannot take a direct object. Amanda Mecker, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst at Brett DiNovi & Associates, provides a definition of stimulus equivalence as well as examples of audio, o Concept Definition: Transitivity. Important characteristics of transitivity:. An untrained relation between two physically dissimilar stimuli (A and C). Based on the property that when two ordered stimulus pairs (AB and BC) share a common element (B), such that the second element of the first pair is the first element of the second pair, this determines a third ordered pair (AC).

Reflexivity is also known as generalized identity matching. In the above example if you are able to select a picture of a bike as the missing picture you would be demonstrating reflexivity if you also had no prior matching training or reinforcement for doing so.
